5 Ways to Fight Frizz
Hot summer days are here! But that also means humidity! 😥
Frizzy hair is caused by a lack of moisture in your hair, and the humidity only makes it worse. As your hair loses its moisture throughout the day, the outer cuticle layer of your hair lifts up and lets the hot air in, leading it to lose more moisture and creating a frizzy mess! (Fun fact: the cuticle layers on your hair look like overlapping fish scales when you peer into a microscope!)
Team Ritualist have put together these 5 ways to fight the frizz!
1. Cleansing with shampoo
Choose a shampoo that’s specially formulated to be gentle cleansing, doesn’t strip too much of the hair’s natural oils, and that is deeply moisturising to replenish the hair. Cleanse with shampoo only a few times a week, and on the other days, just use conditioner to wash your hair. This allows your hair to retain much of its natural oils which is great at reducing frizz.
2. Nourishing mask once a week
Once a week, apply a nourishing mask treatment on your hair. A good nourishing mask will penetrate deep into the hair’s shaft, infusing the locks with moisture. This ensures that your hair is able to withstand the dryness and heat of Australian summer. Our absolute favourite, here at The Ritualist, is the Amika Nourishing Mask.
3. Squeeze and blot to dry
Now that you know how to wash and condition your hair, what you do after you step out of the shower is just as important to control frizz! Don’t rub the hair with the towel to dry, this will rough up the hair cuticle, leaving it exposed to dry/hot hair causing moisture loss. Instead, gently blot and squeeze your hair to dry.
4. Use an Ionic Hair Dryer
If you haven’t got one already, I highly encourage you to make that investment. Ionic hair dryers do work. It release negative ions while you blow dry, which not only cuts down your drying time (reducing the exposure time to heat means less damage!), it also helps to seal the hair cuticles which is important so that it’s not exposed to dry/hot hair which contributes to moisture loss.
5. Styling products that double as treatment
Styling products that double as treatments are heaven-sent. It not only allows you to style your hair, but you get the benefits of its nourishing/repairing qualities as well. The Sebastian Potion 9, has been an iconic style-care hybrid, favoured by top hairdressers around the world. It’s a styling cream infused with active botanicals to lock in moisture, which helps in eliminating frizz.
